Best Tips for Moving with Pets

#1 Plan Ahead

Before the move, ensure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations and obtain a health certificate if you're moving to a new state. You will want to be sure that you have all of their information updated, as well. During a move, your pet may become stressed and that could lead to them trying to escape. If this happens, you’ll want to be sure that their things are up to date. Update their tags and microchip information with your new address and contact details. A microchip will be able to be scanned at a vet if your pet is picked up, ensuring that they get returned to you safely so you’ll want to make sure you’re your phone number is updated on their chip. You can even pack a separate bag with their food, water, bowls, toys, and any medications they may need during the move so you will have it all on hand. Planning ahead for your pet will give you peace of mind as you move to a new place.

#2 Keep Them Comfortable

On moving day, keep your pet in a quiet, secure area away from the hustle and bustle. This could be a bathroom or a spare room with their bed, toys, and some familiar items. Keeping them in a separate area will keep their stress levels low but it will also keep them out of the way as you pack and unpack. If you have a long drive, use a pet carrier or crate to transport them safely to your new home. You can even start taking them on drives the week before you move to get them used to being in the car if they aren’t used to riding along. Once you arrive, set up a designated area with their familiar items to help them feel more at ease. Keeping your pet comfortable will allow them to easily transition to a new place.

#3 Establish a Routine

Pets thrive on routine, so try to maintain their feeding, walking, and playtime schedule as much as possible during the move. It may be hard to stay on schedule for the first few days but as you both get settled, you’ll be able to fall back into your usual routine. Gradually introduce them to their new home, starting with one room and expanding their access as they become more comfortable. This will allow them to explore their new space without getting overwhelmed by everything. You may also want to spend extra time with them to reassure them and help them adjust to their new environment. Keeping your pet in a routine as much as possible will allow them to get more comfortable with their new space and keep them from getting stressed.
